Two-hour Asbestos Awareness Training
(OSHA Class IV Training)

Course Details

This class meets EPA and OSHA requirements for training maintenance and custodial personnel who may come in contact with asbestos-containing material but who are not expected to disturb that material.  It teaches them how to avoid disturbing asbestos during their regular work activity.

The EPA's AHERA regulation requires this training for maintenance and custodial personnel in schools.  The OSHA Asbestos Standard for The Construction Industry (8 CCR 1529) mandates this training for all employees whose work brings them in contact with asbestos-containing materials.  OSHA calls this "Class IV Asbestos Training."

16-hour AHERA Asbestos Operations and Maintenance
(O&M) Training

Course Details

This training provides the EPA-required 16 hours of training needed for those workers in schools who may disturb small amounts of asbestos. It includes the two-hour Awareness Training described above and then adds 14 additional hours which include instruction and hands-on practice in specific techniques used to disturb small amounts of asbestos products.

OSHA Class III Asbestos Training

Course Details

The OSHA Asbestos Standard for The Construction Industry (8 CCR 1529) requires all employees who may disturb small amounts of asbestos to have training equivalent to the above-described "16-hour O&M" training. However, OSHA will allow a "competent" person to determine if other training may be more appropriate for those workers. HMS, Inc. can provide that competent person role and, when appropriate, may be able to recommend and provide alternative training that is much more relevant to the work done by those specific employees. HMS, Inc. will develop training specific to the needs of the workers. This training is often provided in four to six (rather than 16) hours.

U.S. EPA AHERA Accredited Basic and Refresher Training

Course Details

HMS, Inc. is approved by Cal/OSHA to offer basic and refresher accreditation courses in all disciplines (except the worker refresher). Cal/OSHA regulations require AHERA basic course training and accreditation for all employees who might disturb more asbestos than would fit in one standard-sized waste bag. AHERA refresher training is required on an annual basis for all AHERA-accredited individuals.

Four- to Six-hour Specialized Asbestos and
Respiratory Protection Training

This training provides workers the knowledge they need to enter asbestos abatement work sites and do the non-asbestos work that may be needed in an area where asbestos abatement workers are working (often called "contractor assist" work). It includes all information from the Two-hour Awareness Training, as described above, but also includes decontamination procedures and respiratory protection.

Six-hour Local Education Agency (LEA) AHERA Designated Person Training

The EPA AHERA Regulation requires the Local Education Agency to designate an individual to be responsible for compliance with their regulation. That "designated person" must be trained in accordance with the AHERA regulation. HMS, Inc. developed a six-hour class which meets this requirement.

The first two hours are similar to the Asbestos Awareness course described above. The remaining time is targeted directly to designated person responsibilities and requirements. For example, we include discussion of the record keeping involved with management plans, how to interpret the management plans, how to plan abatement jobs and calculate costs, management plan audits, and how to prepare for an EPA inspection.

We recommend that the designated person take this class every two to three years due to the constant changes in federal and state asbestos regulations.

Six-hour Air Sampling Training

This class provides training on mandatory and recommended air sampling procedures, the equipment required, documentation, and data interpretation. It is provided to those individuals who will be responsible for collecting air samples. Training includes information on proper maintenance and use of the equipment, and calibration of the equipment for gathering reliable samples.

Lead paint training requirements are quite complicated and confusing. HMS, Inc. specializes in helping employers determine what training their employees need to be in compliance with the applicable regulations.

A/C Pipe Training - Initial and Refresher Training (Annual)

Course Details

This training allows owners and contractors to conduct exterior transite pipe removal in any quantity without having to be a registered asbestos abatement contractor. Currently any project disturbing over 100 linear feet would require a registered abatement contractor.

Two- to Five-hour Lead Awareness Training

This training is designed to meet the needs of workers who may encounter lead paint but whose work is not expected to create a significant lead exposure risk. We provide information about the history of lead and its various health effects and an overview of lead regulations and how they differ between agencies. We discuss the various "hazard levels" defined by those agencies for lead in paint, dust, and soil. We also discuss hazardous waste issues and the requirements for disclosure of known lead-based paint and/or lead-based paint hazards in housing.

Four- to Eight-hour Lead "Action Level" Training

OSHA requires this training whenever a worker disturbs lead paint as part of paint preparation work, manual demolition, or several other specific "trigger tasks." OSHA also requires this training before a worker is allowed to perform any activity where he or she may exceed what OSHA calls the "Action Level." OSHA provides a specific list of topics that must be taught. This includes information about the regulation, the health effects of lead, respiratory and personal protection practices, and specific work techniques that reduce exposure to lead.

This training normally takes seven to eight hours. It may take less, such as four hours, if the employees already have respiratory protection training and some experience working with environmental hazards.

Contractor/Architect Training

This training provides an overview of several topics that are likely to affect any construction project. HMS, Inc. introduces students to fundamentals of asbestos and lead regulations, including responsibilities of building owners and contractors.  Increasingly, mold is an issue that becomes a factor during renovations or even new construction, and HMS, Inc. dispels some myths and misinformation while applying some common sense knowledge.
