Biographical Info

Mr. Sharp worked for seven years with Cal/OSHA Consultation Service in the Fresno office performing industrial hygiene duties, prior to founding HMS, Inc. Before leaving Cal/OSHA, he was instrumental in developing and providing asbestos training seminars for school officials and contractors throughout California. He was on the U.C. Berkeley Extension Advisory Board, and help develop and instruct various asbestos training programs at U.C. Berkeley’s Pacific Asbestos Information Center. He worked for the state of Nevada in their OSHA compliance program for over a year before joining Cal/OSHA in 1979. Previous experience involves 11 years of biological and toxicology research with Shell Development Company. Mr. Sharp earned his bachelor’s degree in Biology from CSU, Sacramento.

With his education and regulatory background. Mr. Sharp founded HMS, Inc. and instilled company culture that was based on quality people doing quality work. Mr. Sharp, though retired, continues to conduct in-house training for HMS, Inc. – helping to assure the level of quality (in work and personnel) he established continues at HMS, Inc.

Biographical Info

Mr. Sharp is the CEO and Director of Training for HMS, Inc. Michael provides training at various HMS, Inc. facilities, as well as throughout the State of California and the Nation. Mr. Sharp has been with HMS, Inc. since its inception in 1984. He has conducted asbestos and lead inspections for more than 30 years. Mr. Sharp is the former Director of Training, as well as an instructor, at UC Berkeley’s Center for Occupation and Environmental Health’s Asbestos and Lead Paint Training Programs (These programs were closed by the University at the end of 2016).

Mr. Sharp, under HMS, Inc. training program teaches all of the initial and refresher AHERA courses (Contractor Supervisor, Building Inspector/Management Planner, Project Designer, and Worker). Mr. Sharp has also developed and conducted asbestos, lead and mold training courses for Architects, Construction Managers, Building Owners and Contractors.

Mr. Sharp graduated from Chico State in June of 1988 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Organizational Communications with an emphasis in database systems. Mr. Sharp has since become a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer and has designed the inspection and project management databases used in the field by HMS, Inc. personnel.

Biographical Info

Mrs. Chipponeri joined HMS, Inc. in 2007 with an extensive background in Construction Office Management. Mrs. Chipponeri is the Training Coordinator for HMS, Inc.’s Training Division. Mrs. Chipponeri works directly with building owners, property managers, architects, construction firms (from CM firms, General Contractors to trade contractors), water & utility departments, government and regulatory agencies, school districts and others involved in construction work, along with the general public to custom fit their individual training needs. Mrs. Chipponeri is our direct contact for contracting, pricing and scheduling and she oversees and maintains records for our diverse Training Center.

Biographical Info

Mr. Stevens has been with HMS, Inc. since 1988 and is currently Senior Vice President/General Manager. His prior experience was with Twining Laboratories, Western States Testing, U.S. Testing and involved in various soils and concrete testing capacities, and as department manager for U.S. Testing’s asbestos consultation program. Mr. Stevens opened HMS, Inc.’s Fresno office in 1989 and has served our clients in the area since that time. He has significant independent experience in managing HMS, Inc.’s affairs in this area. He has managed over 500 abatement projects since he joined HMS, Inc. Mr. Stevens has taken continuing education courses including, Air Sampling, Environmental Site Assessment, and Indoor Air Quality courses. Mr. Stevens served in the United States Air Force for 7 years.

Biographical Info

Mr. Chipponeri came to the Modesto office of HMS, Inc. in 2008 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from CSU Stanislaus. Mr. Chipponeri currently manages operations in the Modesto, Bay Area, and Reno areas for HMS, Inc. This allows Mr. Chipponeri to work directly with multiple types of clients to assure inspection for, and oversight of, hazards and worker safety is performed. In addition to this work, he has worked with various school districts and charter schools to develop and implement AHERA Management Plans throughout California and Nevada. Mr. Chipponeri is the Modesto office lead in activities involving indoor air quality issues ranging from mold to volatile organic compounds.

Biographical Info

Shannon Johanson re-joined HMS, Inc. in January 2012. Ms. Johanson previously work in our Sacramento Office as a Project Manager Assistant for eight years before expanding her knowledge into the construction industry, and joining a construction company as a Commercial Estimator and Project Manager. She estimated costs and managed large and small projects throughout California and Nevada.

Ms. Johanson is the Primary contact for our Sacramento and Reno satellite offices. She leads all inspection and project management projects in Northern California and Nevada.

Biographical Info

Mr. Tarazon has been with HMS, Inc. since February 2015 and is currently a Branch Manager, in the Fresno office. Mr. Tarazon received asbestos and lead training from The University of California Berkeley Extension. He has been involved in numerous asbestos surveys, abatement and lead inspection projects. Prior to working for Hazard Management Services, Inc., Mr. Tarazon was the General Manager for Seamless Shower Walls overseeing all aspects of demolition, remodeling and installation of plumbing and bathroom fixtures. Mr. Tarazon is also a retired veteran, who honorably served in the United States Marine Corps for 28 years.

Biographical Info

Ms. Yowell joined the Bakersfield office of HMS, Inc. in April of 2005, as field technician, and since that time has advanced to the position of Branch Manager. During her eight years with HMS, Inc., Ms. Yowell has acquired education and experience performing asbestos, lead and mold investigations, indoor air quality assessments, and various types of safety training. Ms. Yowell has provided various levels of lead and asbestos training for Construction Managers, Demolition Contractors, and Abatement Contractors, in addition to providing mandated training for school employees. Frequently, Ms. Yowell is contacted for her knowledge and expertise to assist clients during the early planning stages of renovation projects, small and large. She also assists clients while renovation work is being conducted, and all the way until the project concludes regarding asbestos, lead and mold issues. Her clients know they can depend on Ms. Yowell to represent them, to protect their interests, and reduce their liability exposure resulting from hazardous materials in their buildings.

Biographical Info

Mr. Vuglia has been with HMS, Inc. since June of 2010 and is currently the Senior Project Manager in the Fresno office. Mr. Vuglia has also received training in mold investigative strategies through EM Lab P&K. Mr. Vuglia has been involved in numerous asbestos surveys, lead inspections, remediation projects, indoor air quality, and mold investigations. Mr. Vuglia has received annual continuing education through the Berkeley Center for Occupational and Environmental Health and HMS, Inc.’s training division. Mr. Vuglia is also a certified CPR, AED, and First Aid Responder. Prior to working for HMS, Inc., Mr. Vuglia worked in the commercial and retail printing industry as a graphic design specialist and production key operator. Mr. Vuglia attended Southern Illinois University at Carbondale under a full scholarship award as a competitor for the school’s nationally ranked policy debate team, graduating in 1998 with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science.

Biographical Info

Mr. Erickson came to HMS, Inc. in the summer of 2014 as a Project Manager in the greater Reno-Sparks, Nevada area. Working for 32 years within the Washoe County School District, Danny spent the last 13 years there working for the Regulated Systems and Assessment Department as an Environmental Assessment Technician where he developed his knowledge base in asbestos and lead as well as project development/design, estimating and facility condition inspections. After taking a year off after retirement he joined the HMS Team which started a permanent presence for HMS, Inc. in the Reno/Sparks area.

Mr. Olsen has been with HMS, Inc. since August of 2000 and is currently a Project Manager, assigned to the Fresno office. Mr. Olsen received asbestos training from The University of California Berkeley Extension. In addition, Mr. Olsen has received mold training at the University of California Berkeley Extension and from Forensic Analytical Specialties, Inc. of Hayward, California as well as other training providers. Mr. Olsen has been attending continuing education courses for asbestos and indoor air quality. He has been involved in numerous asbestos surveys and abatement projects and indoor air quality, and mold investigations. Prior to working for Hazard Management Services, Inc., Mr. Olsen worked for several different manufacturing firms designing machinery, and performing lay-out work for the production floor. Further, he was involved in designing custom food processing machines for the dried fruit industry, the cannery industry, and the frozen food industry.

Debby Pyle is the Office Manager of HMS, Inc.’s Fresno office. Prior to joining HMS, Inc. in 1999, Ms. Pyle acted as Executive Secretary to top management at two prominent head hunting firms in southern and central California, managing assistants and support staff of up to 30 employees for many years. Since 2001 Ms. Pyle has been the primary microscopist reading PCM air samples in the Fresno office. Ms. Pyle graduated in 1984 with an AA degree in Computer Programming, and she continues to use her computer skills to HMS, Inc.’s benefit.

Biographical Info

Mr. Henard joined HMS, Inc. in June of 2001. Mr. Henard graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science with a minor in General Business from the California State University, Fresno in May of 2001. His course work was focused on program development using multiple languages with an emphasis on databases. He is proficient with all Microsoft Office applications including Access and Excel. He has improved and expanded the in-house field application that HMS, Inc. technicians use during inspections to make the system faster and more reliable, and is currently working on further enhancements to that system and the creation of others that will all be integrated. Mr. Henard is also responsible for implementation and maintenance of HMS, Inc.’s network, and he provides training and support for all computer-related operations within the company. Prior to joining HMS, Inc., he designed peer to peer networks for computer labs, assembled computers to required specifications, and was responsible for trouble shooting of computer and network equipment.

Biographical Info

Laura Boytz joined HMS, Inc. in January 2017, after managing all operational aspects of the Lead and Asbestos Training Program at UC Berkeley’s Center for Occupational and Environmental Heath for three years. At HMS, Inc., she coordinates our open enrollment classes, and is working to strengthen, market, and expand our open enrollment program. Prior to entering the hazardous materials training world, Ms. Boytz taught High School English for 20 years, and wrote informational and promotional material for small businesses, non-profit organizations, and independent artists. She is proud to be promoting the values of lifelong learning, worker safety, and public health.
